Solidarity Not Charity is an organisation set up to support grass roots groups and communities in the Global South who fight for human rights and social justice and against poverty, war and the negative impact of globalisation. We do this through working in partnership and in solidarity.
The organisation evolved from UK activists who attended the World Social Forums in India 2004 and in Kenya 2007 and were inspired by the grass roots movments and communities from the Global South they met there. We saw how these small groups carry out human rights and social justice work with scarce resources, minimal support and virtually non-existent funding - often risking their own lives and that of their families to do so.
We found there was a need to support these small, independent, community struggles because they are not easily able to access resources necessary to maintain their work and further their aims. But we want to go beyond charity, this is not about pity or hand-outs what is needed and wanted by many in the Global South is Solidarity.
Solidarity Not Charity aims to actively engage people in the issues and causes that grassroots groups are fighting for, to support communities themselves in fighting their battles and determining their own destinies.
We partner with small, community-led grassroots groups providing organisational support and working to build their capacity. We assist with funding activities, launching appeals, campaigning and organising awareness-raising and benefit events in the UK.
